Break for Self-Care

Hi!!! And Welcome Back to Motivated Mondays!

We’re talking about well-being.

Dear friends,

Happy Monday to you! I want to be totally honest with you dear reader. This past week was rough. It was hard on my body, mind, and spirit. As I sat down to write my blog for the week, I realized that it would actually be detrimental to my physical and mental well-being to devote the time and energy I typically do to this blog.

SO, in an effort to walk the walk and practice the positive psychology I share with you all each and every week, I took the time I would usually spend researching, writing, editing, and formatting this blog, and I spent it on myself. I practiced self-care.

That’s right. I am unapologetically saying I prioritized self-care this week. It’s not that I don’t enjoy writing this blog or care about you and your well-being. I do. It’s simply that I needed to be my own best friend this week. I need to readjust and refuel.

My body, mind, and spirit needed time to rest, to heal, to focus, to reset, and to search for a new spark of hope in a difficult situation. For those of your who are invested, don't worry! I promise to pick up where we left off with High Quality Connections next week. But this week, I needed to be flexible with myself and readjust goals in the face of my reality. I needed to go inward and take care of myself.

How did I do that?

Well, I dipped into my "Medicine Bag". I keep a list on my phone that I call "Laura's Medicine Bag”. I originally got this idea from Leonie Dawson in her 2016 Shining Life Workbook (p. 86). It was a wonderful idea, and has proved very helpful in difficult times! It is literally a list of things I can turn to when I am feeling low on energy and inspiration.

Having this list helps me remember what I can do to feel better in a moment of struggle. It helps me take care of myself. It only includes things I enjoy, and having it near me and accessible is quite helpful in difficult moments. Remember, negative emotions narrow our focus, so it can be difficult to feel creative or even remember what is helpful in the midst of challenge. By injecting moments of comfort, positivity, and self-care, I am typically able to lift my mood, see things with more perspective, and garner the energy to move forward.

So this week, I invite you to fill your own medicine bag. Write it out! Make a list. Color it in. Fill it with whatever you adore! You’re proactivity will pay off! Then, the next time you are in a rough patch or just having a hard moment, you know where you can look for a boost. Feeling a little low? I encourage you to engage in some self-care that is meaningful or soothing to you. I know it can be hard to find the time in our busy worlds and that sometime it is hard to feel like you can make yourself the priority. So, if you need permission here it is! Take mine. Even a few minutes can work wonders!

And, and, and...

And, and, and...

So, what's in your Medicine Bag?

I hope you enjoy filling your own “Medicine Bag” this week, and look forward to seeing you again next week when we will pick up where we left off with High Quality Connections.

Until then, I wish you well!
